  1. The memoir that I chose to read was "The Other Wes More". The reason why I chose this book was because I started reading it as a requirement in my english class with Mrs.Wilkey this year and I never got to finished the book.I'm not much of a reader but for some reason this book had caught my attention and I really wanted to pick up were I left off in the book.
So I did, the Other Wes More was about about two young boys living with many different inner strugles. One living in the ghetto, going down the wrong path trying to live the fast life on the streets, hustleing. While the other Wes More is a good role model to others trying to live a better life than what he sees around him. This book is about decision making and unexpected problems that will get thrown in your face and the choices you will have to make in life that will support in the after effect of your decision making.

  5. Hello,

The memoir that I chose to read was “The Rules of Inheritance” by Claire Bidwell Smith. I was recommended by several of my friends to read this book. At first, I wasn’t sure if I was interested in this book, but once I started, I was definitely fascinated. This story is about a girl named Claire Smith, an eighteen year girl who is a freshman in college in Vermont, originally from Atlanta. I was correct about expecting many heartbreaking situations throughout the story. Furthermore, even though the story was about Claire having to deal with both her parents diagnosed with cancer and living so far away from them due to school, it was also about how Claire struggled with bullying throughout her teenage years, as well as trying to figure out herself and who she wanted to become in life.

One theme in this story is how a relationship/friendship can help build great bond and happiness between one another. For example, when Claire was down due to her friendship issues, Sally, her mother was there to console her and wipe her tears telling her “It’ll get better, sweetie. I’m not sure when, but it will” in this part of the story, Claire had said “My mother can always make me feel better about myself.” Personally, I definitely felt a connection towards this part of the story. While I was reading this part of the story, it made me think about the bond I have with my mother, how she would’ve done the exact same thing Sally had done if I was in Claire’s situation.

Personally, the way the book is structured was very confusing at first. As I was reading, I noticed in each chapter the author would right about certain situations at the time when she was a certain age. Each chapter wasn’t in order by age, just random. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend. In my view, anyone who had lost a parent would definitely understand where the author is coming from after reading this beautifully written memoir.

  6. The book i read for summer reading was 'Bloodletting' by victoria Leatham. I started reading this book without the intent of making it my summer reading book, but it was so good, how could i resist?

This memoir is about a woman named Victoria who suffers from depression and alcohol abuse. Victoria graduates high school (Already depressed) and enters a university, which, she drops out after one year because handling her problems and school was overwhelming for her. she moves around constantly, unstable relationships, and drinks way too much. One day she decides to voluntarily admit herself into a mental hospital, where later she gets kicked out for violating the rules and cutting herself.

over the years she sees several therapists and has not fallen out of her depression. now in her mid 30'2 she is relapsing and decides to see a therapist one last time, this last time was all she needed. this therapist was different, he didn't treat her like a crazy person. he treated her as he would treat any other person.

    she slowly recovers.

this book was perfect. the language and structure all fit my needs. i wouldn't change one thing about this book.

  7. The book I read for the summer reading program is titled, “The Other Wes Moore.” It interested me with its deep and very relatable story. The book stars two boys that both go by the name, Wes Moore, and live both very similar and different lives. The writer of the story is being rescued from going down the wrong path, which the other Wes unfortunately follows. The characters are all dragged into the troubles of the two, causing much drama for the boys.

This book engaged me with its very detailed writing and strong premise. The problems these two face are things that a lot of people in these situations face. I felt a strong sense of respect for the good Wes, and a sense of disappointment for the other Wes. This is what a memoir is supposed to do, create emotions in a real situation. This is a memoir I would recommend to most memoir fans.

  10. The book I am reading is Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton. I chose this book mainly because I know that it is a good movie, and I wanted to compare and contrast both the movie and the book. I find this book very interesting. I can hardly put it down, and that’s not like me because I’m not a big reader. Even though I saw the movie, the book is suspenseful. I couldn’t imagine something like that happening to me.

She has a tragic accident and still has the ability and motivation to go on. I am not sure I could get on with my life, never mind get back on a surfboard after an accident like that! I would be scarred for life and too sacred to get back into the water. What an amazing person she is.

  12. The book that I chose to read for summer reading this year was ‘A Stolen Life’ written by Jaycee Dugard. I chose this book because so many of not only my friends, but my family members have read, or at least heard about this book and said it was defiantly a “ story to remember”. Jaycee at about 8 years old, had been kidnapped, raped and help captive for 18 years. Those times for her she referred to herself as a prisoner; a slave doing whatever she was told whenever was asked, and Jaycee always listened. This book had basically dragged me into it, and made me realize, this isn’t just in movies. Kidnapping and anything in that category can happen, to anyone, anywhere, at anytime. This book doesn’t only explain throughout those 18 dreadful years, it also explains how she re-adjusted to the way everyone else lived, and how her and her family dealt with the problem. There is not one little thing stopping me from recommending this book to other students or adults.

Bethany Hamilton had a tragic attack with a shark. And she couldn't surf for a little while but as soon as she could she got right back in the water and did what she loved. If that happened to me I don't think I could get back in the water and do what I loved as fast as she did. By doing what she did she gave inspiration to many people to get back out there and try and do what they love.

  14. The book I am reading is A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard. I chose this book because my friend suggested it and once she read one paragraph to me i was hooked. Just by the title i knew some scenes would be brutal while the end could be happy. I wanted to read this memoir because Jaycee is such an amazing writer. She describes her life so well and she made me feel in her place. I wanted to continue reading because i felt the need to know what would happen to her.

A Stolen life is about a girl, Jaycee Dugard, who was kidnapped at eleven years old while walking to her bus stop. Her life was stolen by a man named Phillip, and technically his wife Nancy. She struggles with so many obstacles and so much confusion but stays strong the whole time. Jaycee is an optimistic woman and i recommend this book to who can take the graphic scenes that Jaycee describes of her life.

  18. For my summer reading I chose the book "Hiding In Plain Sight:Eluding from the Nazis in Occupied France". This book is about Sarah Lew Miller's childhood into adulthood during the holocaust. She was born into a big Jewish family in Dereczyn Poland. Around 1937 her family moved to Paris,France to escape hardship. A couple years later after living in Paris, the Germans occupied France. They were in fear of deportations of jews death camps. They went in hiding. Sarah and some of her brother and sisters were split apart and sent by their mom and dad to villages surrounding France to hid with strangers. They began their lives depending on nobody but themselves over the next coule of years.

I wanted to read this book because i enjoy learning the history of the holocaust and what happened during that time. I read "night" by Elie Weisel which is his experience during the holocaust. I was curious to know if the two stories were similar.

  19. The book I decided to read was called “Lifesaving Lessons” by Linda GreenLaw. I’m not really sure why I chose to read it, but once I got into it, I really enjoyed it. It’s about a older women in her late forties that lived on a small island with a population of only about 50 people. She ended up taking full guardianship of a 15 year old girl, Mariah, who had lived on the island with her uncle. Her uncle was arrested for pedophile and abuse towards Mariah.

Throughout the story, she talks about how hard it is to deal with a moody teenage girl who went through so much. The author was also a full time fisher that had lived on her own before she adopted Mariah. Therefore, in the story she explained how much she had to give to take care of Mariah.

I really enjoyed this book and I’m happy I chose it. It’s definitely something I would recommend to people who are my age all the way to adults.

  21. The memoir that I read this summer was The Other Wes Moore. I had difficulty finding a memoir so a teacher lend me the book to read. At first I was debating if I should read it or not, but it is a very good and interesting book. I can't connect with any of the characters in the book because our lives are nothing alike. The only thing I can really connect to is Wes Moore's mother Joy. Joy reminds me of my mom I connect with Joy because she is a hard working women and just wants the best for her children. Joy just wants the best for Wes Moore so she makes so many sacrifices for him. For example, Joy had to spend a lot of money just to get him into Valley Forge so he can have a better and stricter education. My mom is always making sacrifices for my siblings and I just like Joy. That's one of the reasons why I enjoyed reading this memoir. Another reason why I enjoyed reading this memoir is because it taught me to be more grateful. I get to read about how much worse life could be and this makes me feel immature for complaining about any problem I thought that I ever had because they are nothing compared to Wes Moore's. As I am reading parts in the memoir that just breaks my heart like how neither Wes Moore's had their father in their life. It just makes me more grateful that I actually have my dad as my father figure in my life. The last reason why I enjoyed reading this memoir is because like Wes Moore no matter how your back round was as a child or how you grew up you can always make the right decisions to be successful.

  23. The memoir I’m reading is An Education by Lynn Barber. I was introduced to this book by my freshmen English teacher, Ms. Correa. My interests in the book were peeked when we watched the screenplay in class, but were unable to finish it. So I decided to read the book. It takes place in England throughout the 50’s to the 2000’s. In the memoir the author meets an older man, in his thirties, when she was sixteen. His name was Simon. He began to quart her taking her out to lavish dinners and weekends in different countries. Although she spent two years with him, she barely knew anything about him. The author comes to find out Simon was married with two children. He was a con man wanted in various regions for fraud.
This stood out to me because it is something I would never consider doing. A man in his thirties is much too old in my opinion to be dating such a young girl. Considering he was so vague about his life, I wouldn’t waste two years of my life with him. The author never knew where he lived, his real age, what he did for work, or anything about his past. This to me sends up red flags, I’d end the relationship. The way their paths crossed also differs from how I would handle the situation. The author was walking home from school one day when Simon pulled up and offered her a ride home. Knowing she shouldn’t take rides from strangers she accepted anyways. If I was in the authors’ position I would run to the nearest house then call the police. I recommend this memoir. It’s interesting how this event affects the author later in life.

He talks about what he went through during his training. some of the stuff is unbelievable. This was a great book and I am glad I picked this book.

  29. I chose the book "Yes Chef" By Marcus Samuelsson. The reason I chose this book is because I was very interested in his life. I watch him on the tv show chopped when he judges on occasion. I enjoyed this book a lot more than i though. It was interesting and detailed. It had a lot of words in different languages and he explains what there mean. I would recommend this book to everyone

  30. I chose the book "Just A Boy" by Casey Watson. The book is about the Watson family. They take in foster children for short amounts of time until the agency find somewhere to permanently place them. Usually, troubled kids were placed with the Watsons, but this teen was a bit different; He was blind. The family learns to overcome Cameron's differences and they learn an important lesson. The lesson was that they should be grateful for what they have and not take thing for granted.

  31. I chose the book Jarhead by anthony swofford. It was a book about marines and the lives they lived in the middle east. It went into great detail about many things they lived daily at war that seem so far away. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in war books or are just looking for an exciting read.
